Looking to sell the .com of a current company/site that is operating under a .net domain?
Ran into this question today on one of the forums and thought I would take it up here as a topic to discuss. For our purposes, lets assume you have the name legally without any TM or infringment issues. This seems like a slam dunk to those who are familiar with the power a .com domain has over a .net. It is important however, to look at it from the end users perspective if you want to maximize your results.

The Right Message is Key
The key to end-user sales is that YOU need to help them see the value of the name. As the owner of the thing you are trying to get them to buy, your job is to put that value into terms they can relate to and make sense of. For someone to just say, “I have the .com of your .net”… domainers and those involved in e-commerce would see the value instantly, but to the uninitiated, not always.

Why do They Need the .com?
They have spend time and money to get their company and site operating to where it is, and they were able to do it without the .com. They don’t need your domain to be successful. This is a good thing! This just makes the power of the .com that much stronger. Focus your message around just a few points to illustrate that power and you should have them chomping at the bit to buy your domain. There are plenty of different message points you can use but we have compiled a few to get you on the right track.

Why would having the .com be advantagous to the .net owner?
* .com represents 85% of all the traffic on the internet, making it more familiar to not only internet users, but your customers as well.
*The confusion with .com and .net also relates to email in addition to website traffic. How often do you think people mistakenly type .net verse .com when trying to send a message to XXXX.net?
*How much would one customer lost per year be worth to you and your company? What about 5 customers? 10? 100?
* The .com extension is recognized around the world as the most credible and trustworthy domain extention available. It represents a solid investment for your companies successful future.
* What is one of your competitors got ahold of the .com domain? What might they be able to do with it? What kind of signal would that send? This is always a nice touch to end your arguments.

As anyone who has entered the dating scene can tell it is brutal out there. You might have heard the expression, “The right girl/guy isn’t going to just fall out of a tree.” How true that is. Trying to find the right mate is a challenge and requires planning, effort and most of all, time, to even have a shot at being successful. As someone who is happily married with two great kids, I am here to tell you that it can be done. All you need to do is apply the same principles you use when looking for the perfect domain.

To make the process easier for domainers, I thought I would just put it into terms and processes you understand. Surprisingly, potential mates fall into similar terms as that of domains.

The Hand Reg
Ahh, the elusive one that has yet to be identified and scooped up. The advent of cable, the Internet and MTV has made it very hard for all the truly great specimens to have gone unnoticed and without someone who has claimed them. There are a lot of people out there who make it there job to grab them when they become available. A lot of folks won’t even look for these kinds of mates because finding a premium one this way is rare and very time consuming. If you find one this way though—pure heaven. These are the ones that books and fables are written about. Hold onto them!

The ccTLD
If you are looking for a little adventure and willing to take a cultural risk, why not look for a ccTLD. Typically these do best when matched with members of the same country because of cultural issues and geographical limitations, but they can work if the match is properly developed. The parents (registries) have set these aside for use within their own communities but with globalization and policies of liberalization, have lead to quite a few venturing outside and having very fruitful lives. Be careful though, some are easier assimilated to traditional households than others. You have to keep your own friends and family in mind if you go down this route as it may limit your visitors.

The Generic
These are the supermodels. Everyone wants them, they are very popular no matter who they are with and nearly all of them have been in a relationship for years. They are always working and even being associated with them, lifts your profile. To even approach one of these, you need to be successful and prepared to spend a lot of money if you are to lure them away. In addition, they require a lot of work and investment even AFTER you get them. On the downside, they are typically traded around like commodities by the rich and usually end up with backlinks from previous lives that could come back and haunt them

The Brandable
Everyone likes someone who is funky and original. This is the appeal of the Brandable. There are plenty of them out there and the trick is to find the one that best fits you and your needs. If you do not cultivate and develop these relationships, they will languish. Don’t let this happen to you and choose wisely and work at it. Some of the best and most popular relationships have started out this way. If things don’t work out, there will always be someone else willing to take them one and try something new with them until that potential is realized.

The Adult
This is the dirty little secret you mother never told you about. Adults can be very exciting. They can teach you new tricks and introduce you to a whole new perspective on the scene. These relationships allow you to explore your dark side and do things you know you shouldn’t but have read about. Not everyone can go public with this relationship and they usually burn out quickly. Everyone should try to have a relationship with one of these at least once in your life but a lasting relationship is rare.

The Keyword
These “girl-next-door” matches make up the bulk of the successful relationships out there. They come in all shapes and sizes and there are plenty of good candidates in every kind of niche you can think of. When looking for a match, look for the same qualities an employer would look for; hard working, fulfills a need, works well with others. As long as they contain the same traditional qualities that have an appeal to you and others like you, you can do well. These will always provide the foundation to relationships in my opinion.

The Typo
These relationships are never what they seem to be. Initially everything looks great and you can’t believe you luck, but when you take the time to get to really know them, you begin to see their flaws. Many times these relationships are started by accident. Who can blame you? You see something desirable, need to act fast or risk having it taken out of market by someone else. It is at that point that the error of your ways begins to kick in. You are stuck with them. Let’s face it, it’s not their fault. They weren’t hiding anything initially…you just got starry-eyed. The problem with these relationships is that they last longer than they should and it is very hard to dump them on someone else. Please take your time to look for the right mate, and don’t let this happen to you.

The TM Violation
CAUTION: The relationships are doomed from the start. You know who they are and you go for them anyway. They are already in a relationship and by you entering into one with them you are putting yourself at risk from the angry spouse and the law. These relationships always end badly and cost you way more than you can get out of them Avoid!
